JON — Chapter 22
Overview
Jon Snow leads supply wagons to Mole’s Town, where unrest erupts amid famine and filth. He quells tensions and offers food and safety in exchange for service on the Wall, recruiting sixty-three wildlings, including spearwives and youths, while the Thenns refuse. Jon plans to reopen forts, deepening friction with Bowen Marsh and risking internal discord even as the greater threat gathers.
Summary
At dawn in Castle Black, Jon Snow wakes amid books and worries over Samwell Tarly and Maester Aemon at sea. With Stannis gone south, the Watch is listless, and Jon refuses Bowen Marsh’s pressure to abandon his plan. He rides south with wagons of food, Dolorous Edd beside him, Ghost at his heels.
Along the kingsroad they spot fresh-carved faces in trees watching the route—signs the free folk keep their gods—while Jon orders secrecy from Melisandre. At Mole’s Town, thousands of wildlings emerge from underground tunnels, starving and filthy. As rations are handed out, scarcity sparks shoving and blades are bared until Rory’s horn restores order.
Jon addresses the crowd, warning of wights and white walkers and insisting food must go to fighters. He offers service without vows or forced worship: boys and girls from twelve, old and wounded for support roles, and spearwives, all under strict discipline. Sigorn rejects the proposal for the Thenns, but others waver as Jon stresses that only men can make walls strong.
One girl volunteers first, then boys, wounded men, a spearwife, and finally Halleck, Harma Dogshead’s brother, whose example breaks resistance. Recruits stream forward—greying veterans, green youths, spearwives, even Hornfoots—though the Thenns retreat underground. By day’s end, the wagons return with sixty-three new fighters.
Riding back, Bowen Marsh challenges Jon’s inclusion of women and the danger of arming former enemies. Jon answers with arithmetic and necessity, vowing to train, arm, split, and post the recruits to Eastwatch, the Shadow Tower, Icemark, Greyguard, and three more forts he intends to reopen, accepting the risk to face the greater threat.
