THE BLIND GIRL
Overview
The blind girl continues Faceless Men training, honing her other senses and enduring tests. Begging as Blind Beth, she overhears Lyseni sailors reveal that Goodheart carried enslaved wildling women and children from Hardhome, with Elephant likely returning for more. She identifies the kindly man as her cane-wielding assailant and, after drinking the waif’s nightly cup, awakens with her sight briefly restored.
Summary
The blind girl wakes from a wolf dream to her daily routine in the House of Black and White, asserting “no one” while recalling Arya Stark’s kill list. She eats, answers the kindly man’s ritual questions, and is corrected for repeating tavern gossip about the ailing Sealord.
Her days are filled with lessons: poisons and languages, the lying game with the waif, and navigating the temple by touch, scent, and sound. She tends to the dead, stripping their effects and sorting coins by feel. In the vaults, an unseen assailant tests her with a stick; she fights by sound but is beaten, resolving to do better once her sight is returned.
At night she becomes Blind Beth the beggar. In foggy Ragman’s Harbor, she shelters at Pynto’s tavern, where a familiar cat curls in her lap. Listening to three Lyseni sailors from the seized Goodheart, she learns the ship carried enslaved wildling women and children from Hardhome, taken after storms and deceit split them from their men, and that Elephant may have reached Lys and could return for more.
The next morning she reports three new truths: drunken talk favoring Tormo Fregar is only tavern noise; Goodheart bore slaves from Hardhome; and Elephant may return for more. She then reveals the kindly man as her stick-wielding tester by striking his fingers.
That evening the waif’s bitter cup burns like fire; bread soothes the heat. At dawn the girl opens her eyes to a flickering candle—the first thing she has seen since her blinding—signaling a hard-won, brief restoration of sight.
