Chapter Fifty-Six: Essiya
Overview
After nearly dying by drawing Essiya’s raging magic into himself, Arin recovers as Essiya vows safer methods. To reshape his view of magic, she summons the Sareekh and reveals its wonders underwater.
In council, Arin outlines Rawain’s likely strategy and the Nitraus Vote. That night, Essiya stages public bouts; Arin defeats challengers before kneeling to her. He refuses allegiance to Jasad’s throne and instead swears absolute loyalty to Essiya, which she accepts—redefining their alliance and unsettling both camps.
Summary
Essiya wakes to Efra threatening Arin, who is coughing blood after briefly touching Essiya’s face to draw off her overwhelming magic. The transfer both suppresses Essiya’s surge and accelerates Arin’s healing, but terrifies Essiya; she forbids him from risking himself that way again and sends Efra away, shaken by how close Arin came to dying.
Determined to show Arin that magic can be more than pain, Essiya takes him to the cliffs and summons the Sareekh. The sea-beast cages and plunges them underwater. Essiya shapes breathing bubbles and floods the depths with light, revealing wondrous creatures. Arin’s fear gives way to curiosity as he names species and shares lore, while Essiya wrestles with her magic’s hunger and the Sareekh’s claim that it obeys her and will not harm what is hers.
At supper with Urabi leaders, tension hums around the infamous Nizahl Heir. Discussion turns to unrest in Orban, strained trade-route protections, and Rawain’s strategy. Arin asserts Rawain won’t strip Citadel defenses without the scepter and will instead deploy inexperienced recruits as distraction. He notes “exigent circumstances” in Nizahl law allow war without the Commander’s decree via a Nitraus Vote—likely already held—raising stakes for Jasadi migrations.
To build trust and defuse fatalism, Essiya invites public sparring. Outside, Arin calmly defeats a stream of challengers unarmed, earning grudging respect. When Essiya faces him, they duel intensely. She uses limited magic openly, and for the first time Arin accepts it without dread. She corners him with flame and steel and orders him to his knees before the watching Jasadis.
Arin kneels. Essiya indicts his past as magic’s hunter and offers life if he swears to Jasad’s throne and magic. Arin refuses a throne or abstract oath and instead pledges absolute fealty to Essiya personally—“the weapon of the Malika.” The unseen figures that haunt Essiya press around them as witnesses. After a stunned pause, Essiya lowers her blade and accepts, formalizing a perilous, intimate bond that could reforge alliances and inflame enmities.
