Chapter Thirty-Six: Sylvia

Overview

Sylvia washes ashore within the Mirayah, where her magic fails. A dulhath and long-lost Omalian soldiers attack, but Arin arrives and kills the dulhath; together they slaughter the soldiers.

After a raw confrontation, Arin reveals he kept Sylvia’s necklace and they finally kiss. Pursued through shifting woods by rochelyas, they emerge into a meadow Sylvia recognizes as an ancient Jasad site, hinting the Mirayah’s deep link to history.

Summary

Sylvia awakens on a scorching shore inside the Mirayah, separated from Arin and cut off from effective magic. A dulhath approaches, offering escape for a “fair fight.” As undead-like Omalian soldiers in centuries-old uniforms close in, Sylvia wounds the dulhath with her dagger but is overwhelmed.

Arin arrives and kills the dulhath with ruthless efficiency, then draws the mutated soldiers away and cuts them down at blinding speed. Sylvia joins the fight and together they finish the attackers. Arin stalks off, furious; when Sylvia confronts him, he explodes that saving her was irrational yet unavoidable.

Their charged argument breaks into honesty. Arin admits fear of “winning” if they give in; Sylvia warns she cannot survive betrayal. Arin reveals he has secretly worn the fig necklace she gave him. Sylvia pulls him close; they kiss, and he carries her toward the woods as the tide swallows the corpses.

Inside the Mirayah’s forest, temperature and terrain shift. Arin warns the realm governs magic and wants Sylvia; they must not separate. When blue-eyed rochelyas appear, they flee and burst into a warm meadow at dusk. Drawn to a lone tree, Sylvia recognizes its bark and declares it was once a date tree—proof they stand on land that will become Jasad.

Convinced the Mirayah will not strike here, Sylvia settles against the tree with Arin, her magic still ineffective, and they pause amid the realm’s ominous, shifting design.
