Chapter Eleven: Sylvia

Overview

Essiya awakens in the Geneina after Maia suppressed her, learns a covert plan to unleash magical beasts on a Nizahlan village, and demands the Urabi council halt it. She argues such chaos will justify emergency powers. Confronting Efra, she discovers his emotion-manipulating magic—and an alarming, inhuman coldness within herself.

Summary

Essiya wakes on the floor of the Geneina, tended by Maia and Namsa, learning Maia severed her consciousness to stop her from killing Efra. She recalls a vivid, seemingly real vision of Arin at the Citadel, which unsettles her. Pressing for clarity, she demands to know if Efra’s plan—unleashing magical beasts to create cover—was real.

Namsa admits the operation predated Essiya’s capture. Essiya argues it violates Arin’s rigid legalism and will trigger emergency provisions that permit sweeping state action, turning “disarray” into unrestrained crackdowns. She insists someone must warn Arin and orders Namsa to gather the Aada to halt the strike.

While the council is summoned, Essiya confronts Efra in the baths. He admits he could have stopped her but chose not to use his magic. Demonstrating his power, he amplifies and diminishes her emotions: rage toward enemies, grief for lost friends, and aching longing for Arin.

When Efra pushes further, he touches something unfamiliar that strips Essiya’s affect, leaving her cold and nearly homicidal. Alarmed, he withdraws, calling it inhuman. Essiya suppresses the episode, commands Efra to attend the Aada, and resolves to prevent a disastrous first strike.

Who Appears

  • Essiya
Protagonist; awakens in the Geneina, opposes the beast-unleashing plan, convenes the Aada, and reveals a frightening, inhuman coldness when provoked.
  • Efra
Urabi operative; target of Essiya’s earlier attack. Demonstrates magic that amplifies/diminishes emotions and detects a chilling void in Essiya.
  • Namsa
Urabi leader; admits the operation predated Essiya, resists warning Arin, and moves to gather the Aada for deliberation.
  • Maia
Urabi with mind-severing magic; previously knocked Essiya out to prevent murder, mediates tensions, supports the distraction strategy.
  • Arin of Nizahl
Seen in Essiya’s vivid vision at the Citadel; his legalism shapes Essiya’s strategic objections to the Urabi plan.
