Chapter Forty-Nine: Arin

Overview

Arin returns to the Citadel and receives Wes’s severed head, a message from the Supreme. He lays out the history of magic mining and reveals the Supreme’s conspiracy with Hanim Werda and Arin’s own draining curse. Discovering Vaun murdered Wes on the Supreme’s orders, Arin executes him and demands a confrontation with his father.

Summary

Arin waits in his wrecked chambers after returning from Lukub, drinking talwith and watching the door. Jeru and Vaun arrive to find Wes’s severed head on Arin’s map table—an apparent message from the Supreme. Arin begins to recount the hidden history of magic mining and its long complicity across kingdoms.

Arin explains how Jasad’s centuries of mining enabled the throne’s leverage, how the fortress enchantment failed, and how Nizahl’s armies were ready to strike. He names Hanim Werda, the Jasadi Qayida and Mufsids leader, as the Supreme’s co-conspirator against the Jasadi crown, and implies she bore a half-Jasadi heir usable by both thrones.

Arin reveals his own condition: he lacks magic but can sense and drain it by touch, a result of a failed musrira curse repurposed by the Supreme as a lifelong siphon. He connects this to his father’s foresight about dwindling magic and the need for a living “spigot.”

Turning to Wes’s murder, Arin produces a guardsman’s initialed pin recovered from under Wes’s tongue and accuses Vaun. Vaun admits obedience to the Supreme’s order. Jeru rages, but Arin, recognizing Vaun’s lifelong loyalty to the crown over truth, declares judgment.

When Vaun refuses to draw his sword, Arin executes him swiftly, pinning him to the cabinet and holding his gaze as he dies. Leaving the body, Arin orders Jeru to summon the Supreme to his study, counting down his remaining “tasks” before confronting his father.
