Chapter Thirty: Sylvia

In Mahair, Raya houses the Urabi. Sylvia seeks quiet in her old room with Lateef and Namsa and begins reading Emre’s journal, frustrated by pages of poetry until a final entry arrests her: Jasad’s magic will vanish within two generations; Palia and Niyar mine the south to preserve the fortress; the Nizahl Heir is a weapon; and killing the boy is the only answer.

Sylvia, Lateef, and Namsa debate the implications. They confirm Arin’s touch drains magic and compare it to ancient accounts of Fareed’s sensing and draining. They reject a musrira’s curse as the likely source of Arin’s ability, noting its improbability, and question how Rawain engineered it.

Lateef explains the “wells” of magic: each person stores magic in blood and expends limited reserves that replenish over time. Namsa distinguishes Arin’s draining of current reserves from mining, which rips out the well itself and kills. They identify the central unknown: once magic is drained or mined, where does it go?

Later, Sylvia broods by the hearth, noting silver veining on her palm after stopping an arrow, and contemplates two paths to madness tied to raising the fortress. Raya joins her, bluntly grounding Sylvia. Through a story of a forsaken engagement and a lost child, Raya counsels choice over paralysis.

Admitting her fear of death and magic-madness, Sylvia is held by Raya, who urges her to be “Sylvia” at home tonight and “Essiya” for her people tomorrow. Comforted, Sylvia finally sleeps as the village braces for the imminent Omalian attack.
