Chapter Forty-Eight: Essiya

Essiya and Sefa sit apart from a boisterous celebration, watching Marek dance with ease among mountain allies. Essiya, expecting censure for failing to secure the Omalian army and for detouring to Mahair—where Kenzie died and Medhat chose to remain—finds unexpected gratitude and abundance instead.

Namsa explains many favored raising the ancient fortress Nuzret Kamel over gaining an army, sensing imminent change. Amid shared food, Essiya asks about Arin’s state. Sefa describes Arin as not well, altered after recent ordeals, and increasingly unmoored.

Sefa recounts Arin’s arrival after Jeru and Nizahl soldiers rescued her from the Traitors’ Wells: Arin gave routes through the Desert Flats and declared, “If she dies for them, they will die with her.” Sefa interprets this as proof that Arin loves Essiya and would pursue vengeance if she fell. Essiya doubts the compatibility of Arin’s precision with her chaos, fearing he would suffocate with her.

Sefa counters that Essiya could be Arin’s “air in the chaos,” urging her to recognize that fear signals something still worth saving. She advises Essiya not to let the future torment the present and to act where change is still possible.

The scene closes on small moments of joy—children running, drummers playing, friends dancing—while Efra eyes Marek warily. For one evening, Essiya and Sefa let the future’s threats remain distant and savor the fragile peace.
