Summary
During Jasad’s celebration at Usr Jasad, Lateef welcomes visiting Sultana Sefa and reassures her about attending the recent Summit in Orban. He notes that magic has returned across the kingdoms and new accords now formalize peace and open borders. The crowd cheers as Qayida Namsa and other kitmers perform overhead.
Sefa asks if Lateef has seen Arin since the Summit; he has not. She reveals she visited the Citadel for Arin’s birthday so he would not be alone. Though Arin seemed well publicly, Sefa observes he is steady but untouched, engaging only as needed and mostly with Ehal and his kitmer Niseeba.
Lateef privately recalls Janub Aya, when Essiya vanished into Sirauk’s mist and Arin, newly recharged with stolen magic reclaimed from his father, tried to follow. Soldiers restrained Arin until he broke free; only Sefa stepping into his path stopped him. She has never shared what she said.
Lateef insists Arin will recover; Sefa doubts but asks for a promise. Lateef promises and agrees to visit the Citadel with her for Arin’s next birthday, wondering what gift suits the Supreme. As Namsa’s formation glides past and the crowd celebrates Essiya’s first festival, Sefa’s smile finally appears without the shadow of grief.
