Chapter One: Arin

Overview

Arin’s first assassination attempt at age ten and Rawain’s cruelty forge his fixation on control. In the present, Arin traps Counselor Rodan with a poisoned choice over his abuse of Sayali Barakat and watches him die. Haunted by recent chaos at the Victor’s Ball, Arin resolves to cleanse Nizahl’s court before war returns.

Summary

As a boy, Arin eagerly meets his first assassination attempt, deliberately taking a thrown knife to learn whether he could survive it. Rawain, his father and ruler of Nizahl, discovers Arin’s intent and inflicts pain to teach that survival means never inviting harm. Isra, Arin’s loving, superstitious mother, weeps, and Arin hardens himself against vulnerability, vowing to master pain and never stand still for it again.

Years later, during a storm, Arin summons High Counselor Rodan. Observing the man’s fear, Arin pours two talwith drinks and accuses him of abusing Sayali Barakat (Sefa). Arin cites testimony from Sefa’s mother and Sefa’s character, dismantling Rodan’s denial. He offers Rodan a choice: a swift, private death by a poisoned glass with honors preserved, or a delayed, vicious end and public disgrace.

When Rodan’s facade drops, he calls Arin Nizahl’s doom. Choosing the poisoned glass, Rodan drinks and dies in convulsions at Arin’s table. Arin remains detached, sipping the untainted drink and explaining his resolve to make Nizahl’s court earn its power daily, collecting debts from those who hoard it.

Arin reflects on the Victor’s Ball five days earlier: the Citadel wing burned, the Malika of Jasad emerged from Sylvia’s guise, and Arin nearly killed Sultana Vaida, revealing the cliff-edge of his control. He concludes that, to prevent another war, he will rule with calculated savagery—gathering information, striking decisively, and purging corruption within the Citadel.
