Chapter Fifty-Two: Essiya
Overview
Arin and Jeru arrive captive at the Urabi mountain, provoking internal conflict. Arin’s uncanny calm and swift disabling of Efra heighten fears, but Essiya insists on lawful treatment and confinement in a warded cell.
Essiya discovers a hidden portrait of Hanim among Arin’s belongings, confronting him as the Aada prepares to decide his fate.
Summary
Arin and Jeru are delivered blindfolded and bound to the Urabi mountain corridor where Essiya confronts Efra, Namsa, Lateef, and others over their decision to bring them inside. Essiya insists on searching Arin herself, carefully avoiding skin contact, and finds no weapons. Suspicion grows over why the prisoners came disarmed.
When Efra roughly stops Essiya from removing Arin’s blindfold, Arin, still sightless, swiftly drops Efra with a precise kick and strike, proving the blindfold pointless. Essiya argues they have already compromised the mountain by bringing Arin in, yet refuses summary violence and asserts the Urabi rules for hostages. Lateef ushers Efra away to convene the Aada.
Essiya removes Arin’s blindfold and sees his detached, grief-stricken demeanor. He avoids engaging, even after catching her from a misstep on the stairs, and asks only to be taken to a cell. Namsa places Jeru in a standard cell while Arin is confined in the most secure, warded cell. Arin remains passive, heightening Essiya’s concern.
After slamming Arin against a wall to demand his purpose, Essiya receives only resignation: he tells her to let the Urabi do as they please. A folded item from his coat falls—Essiya opens it to a portrait of Hanim, a figure from her past who terrifies her. As Namsa departs to gather the Aada, Essiya confronts Arin through the bars, asking why he carries Hanim’s image, setting the stakes for the council’s judgment and their fractured bond.
