Chapter Forty-Five: Marek
Overview
Marek rushes to save Sefa from the Traitors’ Wells but is seized by Nizahl soldiers and brought before Arin. Sylvia’s aerial proclamation to rally Jasadi jolts Arin to act. He orders Jeru and recruits to free Sefa, mobilizes regiments to seize the Ivory Palace, and openly breaks the Zinish Accords.
Summary
Marek spots Lukubi guards taking Sefa toward the Traitors’ Wells and fights to pursue, despite warnings from Zane and Almerour about the consequences. He cuts through festival traffic toward Essam, only to be intercepted in the woods by Jeru, who urges restraint and warns that saving Sefa would breach treaties and doom them both.
Nizahl soldiers surround them, and Arin arrives to oversee their capture. In a cabin, Jeru faces accusations from Vaun, Layla, and Bayoum; Marek lies that he coerced Jeru, trying to protect him. Arin, distant and detached, abruptly orders Marek freed to attempt a rescue, but leaves Jeru bound, prompting Marek to demand Jeru’s release.
An earthquake and violent winds interrupt as hundreds of kitmers cross the sky broadcasting Sylvia’s call for Jasadi to unite. The sight snaps Arin into focus. Marek reminds him of the mold Arin took of Vaida’s ring during the trials, linking it to Sefa’s theft attempt.
Resolved, Arin issues sweeping orders: Vaun is to free Jeru and lead recruits to extract Sefa from the wells, subduing any Lukubi guards; Bayoum must signal Nizahl regiments to take the Ivory Palace; Layla is sent racing to Orban. Arin declares the Accords already broken and commits to open war.
