Chapter Ten: Arin

Overview

After a bruising council, Arin learns Felix’s raids have killed Nizahl soldiers and counters by stationing troops at Omalian nobles’ homes to pressure the Heir. Arin then glimpses a troubling vision of the Jasad Heir at the Citadel. Later, with Vaun, he oversees discreet forging of engraved swords as a contingency should peace with Lukub collapse.

Summary

Leaving the council, Arin is intercepted by Layla, who reports that the Omal Heir, Felix, is raiding lower villages and that fourteen Nizahl soldiers have been slain at Essam outposts, with Omal blaming villagers. Arin orders a troop of fourth-year soldiers stationed at Omalian nobles’ quarters, calculating that visible Nizahl presence will anger the nobles and force Felix to reconsider.

As they cross the Citadel grounds, a brief personal exchange reveals Layla’s failed courtship and her veiled attraction to Arin. Arin then sees, seemingly alone, a vivid apparition of the Jasad Heir near the east wing. Layla cannot see her, confirming to Arin that either his mind or unknown magic is at work. Startled by his own instinct to protect rather than capture, he composes himself and dismisses the moment.

Later, Arin visits a blacksmith with Vaun in plainclothes, overseeing the forging of swords engraved with a specific sigil he commissioned across Nizahl. He tells Vaun he hopes they are never needed, since deploying them would mean the Zinish Accords have been broken and war with Lukub has begun.

Recognizing that Sultana Vaida’s choices are unpredictable, Arin prepares for all outcomes while noting that his presence unsettles the craftsmen. He considers sending Wes in his place to maintain progress. As carts roll by and the smiths resume work, Arin reflects that the new blades are only a precaution—for now—and doubts they will remain so.
