Chapter 53: The Third Treason

In the Mistral’s gym, Hadrian spars with Siran and then Pallino, briefly escaping recent tensions through the rhythm of fighting. Ilex and Elara arrive as the friendly bout continues, their banter grounding the team after captivity and interrogation.

Switch unexpectedly enters. The room falls silent, and Hadrian confronts him for contacting Bassander Lin and exposing their position. Switch claims he saved Hadrian and Valka, arguing the situation had become too dangerous and that Lin could be reasoned with.

Pallino rebukes Switch, stressing loyalty to their own people over the Empire. Hadrian remains calm but unequivocal: Switch’s act endangered everyone aboard and forfeited trust. He contrasts his plan—to return on their terms after securing peace with the Cielcin—with the forced surrender Switch triggered.

Pressed, Switch admits fear and ignorance of Lin’s intent to keep them confined and possibly execute Hadrian. Hadrian rejects apologies as insufficient for the risks incurred and orders Switch to leave the ship, using his given name, William, to sever their bond.

Supported by Pallino and the others, Hadrian banishes Switch. The scene ends with the crew recognizing that Lin and Smythe effectively hold them prisoner, while Hadrian grieves the loss of a friend he can no longer trust.
