Chapter 73: Broken

Overview

Bassander rallies survivors through the burning Garden as Cielcin ambush them. Fearing Aranata will scuttle the ship, Hadrian breaks away to intercept the prince. By the lakeshore, Hadrian duels Aranata and is overpowered—losing his arm and then his head. The victory cements Aranata’s vengeance and shatters the human advance.

Summary

Hadrian, Bassander, Valka, and their battered forces return to the Garden as the Cielcin retreat. The wreck of the Cielcin ship hangs above, and Bassander orders the far door secured and tunnels mapped. When Hadrian reveals he killed Nobuta and warns Aranata has nothing left to lose, a report arrives that Greenlaw is dead, briefly staggering Bassander.

Grenades erupt along the road, and scahari fighters spring an ambush, crushing the advanced party with nahute and blades. Valka halts many nahute mid-flight, drawing attackers; Hadrian intercepts three Cielcin to shield her, and the group struggles to rejoin Bassander’s line. Convinced Aranata may scuttle the ship, Hadrian resolves to push for the Cielcin bay despite Bassander’s demand he stay.

As they race past the lake, Aranata appears with elite guards. Hadrian orders his companions to draw the fighters off and confronts the prince. Aranata wields Smythe’s highmatter blade; the duel rages along the cliff and water’s edge under red light from the burning wreck. Hadrian tries to exploit the prince’s fury but tires as Aranata’s precision and strength dominate.

Aranata seizes Hadrian by the hair and slams him against the rock, nearly finishing him. A volley of distant plasma distracts both; Hadrian commits to a final thrust. The prince steps inside, wrenches his wrist, and cuts off Hadrian’s right arm. As Valka and Bassander cry out, Aranata ignites Hadrian’s fallen sword and, without speech, decapitates him.

The chapter closes on Hadrian’s death—blood pooling at the lakeshore, the human assault leaderless, and Aranata’s vengeance realized—leaving the wider fate of both forces in peril as the battle continues.
