Chapter 48: A Red Reunion

Overview

Bassander Lin confronts Hadrian and Valka before Kharn Sagara, revealing an accord: Kharn will arrange an introduction to the Cielcin. Imperial forces restrain Hadrian and Valka while an interceptor orbits and the Obdurate moves to rendezvous offworld. Kharn asserts Brethren’s prophecies are never wrong, confirming Hadrian’s sense of grim inevitability.

Summary

Hadrian is stunned to find Bassander Lin in Kharn Sagara’s throne hall. After a brief exchange of barbs, Hadrian demands to know who summoned the Legions, while Kharn denies inviting Imperial forces and condemns Imperial aggression. Valka presses Lin on logistics, and Hadrian suspects Brethren allowed the coordinates to be sent.

Lin approaches Kharn to confirm their accord. Kharn, forced by Imperial exposure, concedes he has little choice. The bargain becomes clear: in exchange for Kharn brokering an introduction to the Cielcin, Lin will withhold bringing the full fleet to Vorgossos, instead keeping only an interceptor in orbit and arranging a rendezvous with the Imperial flagship, the Obdurate, offworld.

When Hadrian asks about their companions—Otavia Corvo and the Mistral’s crew—Lin ignores him. Legionnaires move in; Valka yields to arrest while Hadrian resists and is subdued and manacled. Kharn demands his payment per the agreement, but Lin insists payment follows once contact with the Pale is secured.

Before they are removed, Kharn addresses Hadrian directly, stating that whatever Brethren told him is never wrong. Despite captivity, Hadrian recognizes that events are aligning with Brethren’s warnings: the Empire has arrived, the Cielcin contact is imminent, and they will be taken to the Obdurate.
