Chapter 32: Saturn or Dis

Yume leads Hadrian through lightless corridors, down into an abyssal cavern where a white pyramid hangs above a subterranean sea. Separated from Yume at massive bronze doors, Hadrian enters a dim hall of pillars, statues, and ancient art to find Kharn Sagara—wired into a throne, ageless, silent.

Kharn first speaks through a cloud of blue-eyed drones, musing on a life-giving “tree” and why petitioners come: to live anew. Hadrian accuses him of cloning and destruction of copies, then states his mission—to contact the Cielcin leadership and seek peace. Kharn tests him with quotations and questions his motives.

When Hadrian presses for help, Kharn counters that war is perpetual and human life cheap, claiming more than fifteen millennia of observation and five centuries of trading with Cielcin factions—even before Imperial first contact. He dismisses Imperial stakes and neutrality charges, returning Hadrian’s Jaddian sword while denying direct assistance.

Hadrian warns the spreading war could reach Vorgossos. Kharn remains unmoved, offering only the palace’s hospitality. As Yume moves to escort Hadrian away, Kharn calls him back and, after a tense pause, grants a narrow concession: Hadrian may bring the captured Cielcin baetan to present its case.

The audience ends with Hadrian awed and defeated, yet holding a sliver of opportunity—Kharn will at least hear the prisoner, keeping alive a fragile path toward contact.
