Chapter 49: Two Treasons

Hadrian begins a comparatively comfortable imprisonment aboard the Imperial interceptor Schiavona under Captain Bassander Lin. In transit, he sees Kharn Sagara’s unfathomably vast black ship up close, recognizing it from prior visions and Calagah, which underscores the scale and antiquity of the forces now converging.

Expecting Bassander, Hadrian is instead visited by Jinan. She plays a holographic message from Knight-Tribune Raine Smythe authorizing Hadrian to disregard regrouping orders and proceed to Vorgossos by any means, a directive that could doom them both if exposed. The message confirms Hadrian’s covert mandate and frames his actions as sanctioned but dangerous.

Jinan confronts Hadrian with anger and grief over his kidnapping of Tanaran and the deaths on the Balmung, accusing him of betrayal despite Smythe’s order. Their exchange turns physical before Hadrian holds back, acknowledging he wanted a chance to act but not like this. When he asks who alerted Bassander, Jinan first falters, then hardens.

Jinan reveals that Switch, Hadrian’s oldest friend, telegraphed the fleet claiming Hadrian had gone mad. The revelation devastates Hadrian, layering his own “two treasons” (against Empire and Jinan) with a counter-treason against him. Their relationship collapses under anger, pity, and regret.

Jinan departs after stating Captain Lin is coming to speak with Hadrian, leaving him bloodied, numb, and facing imminent consequences as the Imperial operation moves toward rendezvous with the Obdurate and Kharn’s terrifying vessel looms overhead.
