Chapter 7: Things Unseen, Things Remembered

Overview

Shaken and without a terminal, Marlowe regains contact from a street booth and learns his team survived, though Ghen’s body was not recovered. He waits in a cafe, wrestling with grief and memories, until Jinan arrives. Marlowe confirms he killed the Painted Man’s homunculus, and he and Jinan reaffirm their bond as they depart together.

Summary

Disoriented and missing his terminal, Hadrian Marlowe wanders Arslan, cleans blood from his face, and confronts his reflection and mounting grief. Remembering his scholiast Gibson’s counsel—"Grief is deep water"—Marlowe steadies himself, resolving to float rather than drown in sorrow.

He reaches a public telecomms booth and contacts high orbit. Jinan reports Switch, Crim, Ilex, the soldiers, and Greenlaw are safe, but Ghen’s body was not recovered. Marlowe, relieved yet chastened, says he killed the Painted Man—the skin-changing homunculus—and Jinan heads down to retrieve him.

Marlowe shelters in a cramped cafe beneath an old freighter, eats noodles, and drifts through memories: the SOM that nearly killed him, lean years on Emesh, and the campaign on Pharos where Jinan saved him and their bond began amid the fall of Marius Whent and Bordelon’s death.

Jinan arrives wearing Marlowe’s coat recovered by Switch. Seeing his exhaustion, she asks after his escape, and Marlowe confirms he slew the homunculus that took him. They exchange affection in Jaddian; Marlowe lets her keep the coat.

Arm in arm, they head for the shuttle. The brief warmth of reunion does not erase their loss, but together they endure it, resolved to float above grief as they leave the city behind.
