Chapter 26: The Oracle

Overview

Hadrian defies orders to explore the Enigma’s visitor port, witnessing a kaleidoscope of cultures and strange beings. Lured by a nuncius to an oracle, Jari—an Exalted altered by the Deeps—he learns his past is “broken” and erased, and his future inspires only a terrified cry of “Light!” The encounter deepens the mystery of Hadrian’s origins and foreshadows a catastrophic destiny.

Summary

After six days aboard the Enigma, docking umbilicals extend and Hadrian convinces Otavia to let him disembark, taking Switch along. They enter a dim, perpetual “night,” where Hadrian in armor still feels exposed without weapons. Among diverse crews and chimeric workers, Switch’s fear contrasts with Hadrian’s curiosity as they take in the marketplace circling the ship.

The concourse teems with human and posthuman traders, androids, gene-sculptors, and exotic wares. Hadrian spots an Irchtani and surges forward, then loses both the Irchtani and Switch in the press. Shaken by a glimpse of someone resembling Gibson, he wanders into side passages and is approached by a Mandari-styled nuncius, Marko, who touts an oracle that can see past and future, altered by “Deeps” on Apas.

Intrigued, Hadrian follows Marko into a service tunnel and a chamber where the mutilated Exalted oracle, Jari, sits wired to life-support. Jari claims the Deeps gave him “eyes” to see time. When Hadrian engages him, Jari reacts with alarm, insisting Hadrian has “no beginning,” that his “river” is broken and his ship was taken and wiped clean. He eerily echoes phrases from Hadrian’s past, proving uncanny knowledge he should not possess.

Pressed about the future, Jari convulses, his machine limbs flailing, and he screams “Light! Light! Light!” Marko intervenes, brandishing blades and driving Hadrian out. Hadrian flees, rattled and confused, carrying away the oracle’s revelations: a past that has been erased and a future defined by blinding, terrifying light.
