Chapter 54: Bringing Storm
Overview
Knight-Tribune Raine Smythe arrives on Kharn Sagara’s ship with troops and formal authority, instructing Hadrian to be useful while revealing Hauptmann’s distrust. She coordinates cargo transfer via five freighters and strict separation ahead of Cielcin talks. Smythe pointedly raises Vorgossos’s disposition, startling Kharn, who warns her before allowing the Imperials to withdraw.
Summary
Raine Smythe lands with a ceremonial escort to meet Bassander Lin and Hadrian aboard Kharn Sagara’s ship. She is unimpressed by the venue but firmly in command, noting Hauptmann sent a translator and instructing Hadrian to make himself useful despite Imperial distrust. Hadrian observes her mixed vulnerability and iron resolve.
Escorted through disorienting, gravity-twisted corridors, the Imperials enter Kharn’s dim hall, where Kharn’s children, Ren and Suzuha, and the golem Yume attend. Kharn demands confirmation of the promised payment; Smythe affirms and agrees to begin transfer.
Terms are set: five freighters will deliver cargo; their crews must depart afterward. Kharn insists Imperial personnel be minimized and remain aboard Schiavona, and that Imperial and Cielcin delegations be strictly separated when the Otiolo scianda arrives. Smythe accepts, prioritizing order and security.
Before departing, Smythe raises the “disposition of Vorgossos,” briefly surprising Kharn. He answers with a thunderous warning not to threaten him. Smythe reframes her remark as enthusiasm for cooperation, then withdraws with full ceremonial dignity, leaving Hadrian to reflect on Kharn’s unmatched power and the precarious balance ahead of the Cielcin talks.
