Chapter 46: The Long Cold

Concussed and disoriented, Hadrian drifts through days in the SOM cell with Valka nearby, soothed at times by her unacknowledged singing. As his vision clears, the strange, perception-defying white shell steadies their belief in the inexplicable. Calvert does not return, ration bars and stagnant water mark time, and despair settles as they reckon lost connections to Tanaran, the Cielcin, and possibly the Mistral.

With no means to escape and Valka unable to breach the door, they accept there is nothing to do but wait, especially after the daimon’s warning that the Cielcin are coming. They speculate about Captain Corvo’s fate, hoping she fled the system, while Hadrian carves portraits of people from his life into the concrete, trying to impose meaning on their stasis.

In long conversations, Valka challenges Hadrian’s insistence that he is not a soldier, reminding him of his own words. He argues that unbounded freedom is chaos, invoking Imore’s lesson that choices and constraints give direction. Valka presses him to imagine another life—traveling together to Judecca and beyond—yet Hadrian feels compelled to see his present struggle through.

Their rapport warms amid the bleakness as Valka teases his drawings and asks him to depict her. Hadrian recognizes his duty inclinations and, while still uncertain, leans toward embracing the role others see in him.
