Chapter 44: Understanding

Kharn’s SOM guards march Hadrian and Valka into a frigid, decayed concrete facility below the seawall and lock them in a bare room. Stripped of weapons and tools, they assess their prison’s meager resources and Hadrian struggles with the recent encounter with Brethren.

Discussing the entity, Hadrian relays Brethren’s claim to be a “daimon” and to use living tissue. Valka, unsettled yet analytic, suggests neuronal substrate explains its capabilities and rejects the idea it is a conventional AI or a surviving Mericanii, though the facility seems ancient enough to have such origins.

Hadrian recounts the vision Brethren showed him—future battles, the Quiet, and a paradoxical Cielcin lord—while fearing Valka’s scorn. Instead, Valka listens and introduces the Deeps: microorganism “living computers” known to grant altered perception, even time-sight, on several worlds in Upper Centaurus. This offers a framework for what Hadrian experienced.

As they endure the cold and search the room, Valka finds a shard of brilliant white material. Hadrian recognizes it as a piece of the shell-cradle from his vision, concluding it somehow passed from vision to reality. The tangible proof convinces him the vision’s source and Brethren’s message are credible.

They infer Kharn will keep them alive until he has use for them, though conditions are harsh. Anchored by the shell’s proof and Brethren’s charge, Hadrian asks what he must do; Valka grips his wrist and insists they are already fighting, reaffirming their shared resolve.
