Overview
Hadrian returns to the Schiavona shaken, confides in Valka, and shows her the Quiet shell shard, deepening suspicions about his resurrection. Bassander Lin, transformed by what he witnessed, kneels and proclaims a miracle, prompting the crew to hail Hadrian as "Halfmortal." Reluctantly, Hadrian accepts the public mantle that will steer his fate.
Summary
Hadrian returns alone through the umbilical, visibly shaken after parting with Switch. Valka shields him, offers comfort, and he admits his confusion over surviving beheading. They debate whether the Quiet were responsible, and Hadrian shows Valka a shell fragment that inexplicably returned with him, suggesting a link to Quiet ruins like Calagah.
Valka’s curiosity ignites as she examines the shard, considering it akin to highmatter. Bassander Lin interrupts; Valka deflects his interest. Confronted by the man who watched him die, Hadrian denies understanding what happened. Bassander, unexpectedly reverent, calls it a miracle and reaches to touch Hadrian as if for benediction.
On a catwalk above the busy cargo bay, Bassander kneels before Hadrian. Word spreads and the bay quiets as soldiers, mercenaries, and officers watch. Bassander suggests Hadrian might be the one to end the conflict, and the crowd—many of whom saw Hadrian die—erupts, calling his survival a sign.
A chant rises from below: “Halfmortal!” What began as a jest becomes a public title, fixing Hadrian in the eyes of the company as something more than a man. Hadrian, embarrassed and wary of losing control of his story, nonetheless raises his good right hand to the acclamation while Valka stays back, observing.
Internally, Hadrian recognizes the moment as an ending and a beginning: he has been remade by death and return, and the unwanted legend now shapes his path. He senses it points toward Gododdin and a fiery end, even as he is young, alive, and newly named by the masses.
