Chapter 1: The Red Company

Marlowe emerges from fugue, haunted by memories of Bordelon, Gilliam, and past battles. In medica, Doctor Okoyo oversees his revival, confirms six years have passed, and orients him: they are aboard the captured Pharaoh. As clarity returns, Marlowe recalls the Pharos betrayal, Bordelon’s death, and their ongoing mercenary cover while seeking Vorgossos and a path to peace with the Cielcin.

Summoned to Bassander Lin’s quarters, Marlowe learns that Otavia Corvo’s network has reached a local handler named Samir tied to the elusive Painted Man, a possible lead. Lin derides their mixed-force Red Company as unreliable and frames the assignment as punishment, revealing bitterness over decades of Cielcin attacks.

Marlowe argues senior representation is needed for any meeting with Extrasolarians and insists he must go, since Corvo, Jinan, and Valka cannot represent the Empire. Lin resists, citing losses and political risk, then relents under the pressure of mounting colony deaths and the hope of a diplomatic breakthrough.

After a barbed exchange—Lin mocking Marlowe’s personal life—Marlowe leaves and meets his lictor, Switch, who escorts him to a shuttle. En route, they note shifting loyalties and command across their three ships: Pharaoh (Lin), Mistral (Corvo), and Balmung (Jinan Azhar), with the Balmung also holding Cielcin prisoners and Valka’s research.

Departing the Pharaoh, Marlowe glimpses Rustam’s umber disk and the Cielcin’s gouge where a city once stood. Switch estimates millions dead and survivors under alien occupation. Confronted by the ruin, Marlowe questions their pace but reaffirms the mission’s aim: secure contact through Samir to reach the Painted Man and, ultimately, a peace that might prevent further annihilations.
