Chapter 74: Howling Dark
Overview
Hadrian passes through a void after his beheading, confronts a regal vision of himself, and follows a guiding "star" that becomes the Vorgossos shell. Swept back into life, he awakens in the Garden missing his left arm and gripping Olorin’s sword. The Quiet appears as Tor Gibson, confirming his death and declaring their intent to exist.
Summary
Hadrian’s awareness stirs in absolute darkness, stripped of identity and memory until a distant voice restores his name. Memories flicker—childhood, comrades, lovers, and his own execution—while he senses himself moving toward a hidden truth within the Dark.
He encounters an armored, imperial vision of himself in black and red, which silently points toward a single white star. Reaching for it, Hadrian discovers it is the shell shard from his Vorgossos vision; tearing it free opens a hole of light that sweeps him onward.
Thrown back into sensation, Hadrian awakens on a streambed beneath trees, in pain yet alive. He discovers his left arm is severed but his right hand holds Olorin’s sword, contradicting his memory of losing the right. Sounds of battle echo distantly in the Garden.
The Quiet appears in Tor Gibson’s form, weightless upon the water, and calmly tells him, "You died." When Hadrian demands meaning, the Quiet hauls him upright with an unseen force and says they are not finished with him.
As the apparition vanishes, a final answer resounds—To exist—leaving Hadrian alive, altered, and bound again to the conflict by forces beyond comprehension.
