Chapter 47: One Villain and Another
Overview
Yume retrieves Hadrian and Valka from their cell. During the ascent, Brethren makes cryptic contact, urging Hadrian to protect Kharn’s children and seek hardship. Before Kharn Sagara can act, an Imperial force led by Bassander Lin arrives to take custody, shifting control from pirate lord to Empire.
Summary
After months of neglect, the cell door opens. Yume, accompanied by six blank-faced SOMs, orders Hadrian and Valka to follow. They traverse the ruined undercity to a tram ascending the cavern wall, passing relics of the Foundation War. Hadrian reflects on limits and darkness while Valka keeps close.
Mid-ascent, Hadrian experiences a vision-contact with Brethren. The entity urges him to protect Kharn’s children, claiming they are the future and that “they” have forced Brethren’s hand. It instructs him to seek them at “the highest place, at the bottom of the world,” and declares, “Lucifer and Prometheus are the same,” before the vision breaks and Valka steadies him.
Yume leads them back into Kharn Sagara’s inverted pyramid. As they approach the throne, Valka moves from distance to arm-in-arm with Hadrian, a rare closeness. Kharn greets them with sardonic courtesy and hints at a development affecting them all, his many eyes watching from the hall.
Expecting a Cielcin prince, Hadrian turns as the great doors open. Instead, an Imperial detachment marches in with ceremonial icons. Their commander, Bassander Lin, presents formal thanks to Kharn Sagara, announcing the Empire’s claim on the “fugitives.” The display makes clear that Hadrian and Valka have lost their tenuous freedom, passing from Sagara’s power into Imperial hands.
