XIII JASON
Overview
Jason dreams of Lupa at a ruined redwood mansion, the wolf-sage who raised him. Lupa reveals Hera is imprisoned there, while a dark spire swells to awaken the giant king. She orders Jason to find and cleanse the site before Hera falls, naming him son of Jupiter.
Summary
Jason dreams he is herded by wolves into the ruins of a vast stone-and-log mansion in a redwood forest. In a mist-filled reflecting pool, he meets Lupa, the she-wolf who once found and trained him. She reminds Jason that this place is where demigods are claimed—the burned house, the house of the wolf.
At Lupa’s signal, the mist clears to reveal two emerging spires at opposite ends of the pool. One, near Jason, is a solid, dark mass that keeps widening, like a horrible flower bulb. The other, near Lupa, is cage-like, containing a struggling, misty figure that Jason recognizes as Hera.
Lupa explains that their enemy has chosen this sacred site to awaken her most powerful son, the giant king. If Hera (Juno) falls, the enemy will rise, ending everything. The growing dark spire signals the imminent awakening, and the wolves snarl at both structures, underscoring the danger.
Lupa commands Jason to find this place again in the waking world, cleanse it, and stop the awakening before it is too late. She rejects pleas for fairness or guidance, demanding strength—conquer or die. As she dismisses him, Lupa calls Jason their saving grace and identifies him as the son of Jupiter.
