Piper admits her history of “stealing” by simply asking—hinting at a persuasive power—and privately fears a dream that threatened her father’s life. At Hephaestus’s shed, weapons are offered, but Piper chooses the dagger Katoptris, once Helen of Troy’s, and is hit by a vision: flames, a stone-like face, and her father bound before a bonfire.

Annabeth discreetly lets Piper call home; assistant Jane offers no information, deepening Piper’s dread. As they tour more cabins—Artemis’s, Aphrodite’s under Drew, and the Big Three—Annabeth reveals Olympus has been sealed and the gods are silent, Dionysus recalled, and Hera had sent her to the Grand Canyon seeking a one-shoed boy.

Drawn to the ominous Hera cabin, Piper notices fresh footprints and enters despite Annabeth’s warnings. Inside the cold, ceremonial space, they find Rachel Elizabeth Dare, the mortal Oracle, following a hunch that Hera and Percy’s disappearance are linked.

Rachel is suddenly possessed: green smoke swirls, and an older woman’s voice seizes her, commanding, “Free me, Piper McLean, by the solstice, or the earth shall swallow us.” The voice warns that the fiery foe is only the first and that bowing to him will raise their king and doom all. Overwhelmed, Piper collapses.
