42. Gravity Is Your Friend

Jake recognizes the Census Golem prefers trading hits over dodging and that its shield blocks most approaches except destructive arcane mana. He switches to the Pillar of Encumbrance, whose durability and shifting weight let him batter the golem while peppering it with explosive arcane arrows, slowly taxing its barrier.

Despite looking battered—burns, bleeding from Gaze overuse, and damage from the grappling hook—Jake keeps pace and identifies the exposed axeblade as a rare unshielded weakness. He resolves to remove it using Touch of the Malefic Viper.

Meanwhile, the Dungeon Monitor assesses Jake’s build as exceptionally adaptive, fast, and perceptive, noting unusual poison and destructive/arcane-like affinities and considering upgrading the challenge category as Jake defies expectations.

Jake feints vulnerability, drawing the golem into a pursuit hundreds of kilometers upward inside the vast cube arena. He weaves dense arcane threads on his back while maintaining pressure with arrows and staff strikes, then intentionally exposes a wing to bait a close strike.

As the axeblade cuts him, Jake springs the trap: arcane strings bind the golem’s lower body and left arm, tethered to the ever-heavier Pillar. He intercepts the axeblade, locks the limb in an armbar, and channels Touch of the Malefic Viper into the unshielded metal while gravity drags them down.

The golem’s disruptive mana wave and jets fail to break the highly stable strings. When it converts its legs into laser cannons to sever the tether, Jake reels the Pillar tight. The corroded axeblade fractures, and Jake rips off the lower arm. He releases, regains flight, lets the bound golem continue its high-velocity fall, and uses the brief window to construct a decisive Arrow of the Ambitious Hunter.
