39. Heartwarden

Jake scouts the Heartwarden guarding a sealed gate and notes four inert magic circles matching the ancient wall’s material. Anticipating prepared defenses, he readies an Arrow of the Ambitious Hunter but saves it, opening instead with a charged Arcane Powershot and poisoned arcane arrows.

The Heartwarden reveals green runic barriers, a mushroom shield, and a crystal halberd, blocking and healing while adding Fungalmancer-style vines and spores. Jake pressures it with rapid shots and poison mist, learning it can excise infected flesh and rapidly regenerate. When the Heartwarden cages him with barriers and unleashes a storm of empowered wooden spears, Jake tanks and weaves through, closing distance.

As the Heartwarden focuses on spear control, Jake freezes its body with Gaze, disrupts its concentration by triggering his Mark, and fires the prepared Ambitious Arrow into its chest, blasting it into the wall. The spears lose control. Sensing a phase change, Jake activates Limit Break, chains One Step Miles, and floods the mutating body with poisoned arrows before armor can fully form.

Tentacles lash out as the body attempts a grotesque transformation, but Jake switches to blades, carves openings, and plants a Potent Necrotic Poison bottle with an Aluabsorbant Metal Sphere to detonate inside. He follows with repeated Arcane Powershots and more poison, breaking barriers and ignoring errant tentacles until the abomination finally goes still.

System prompts confirm the kill of the level 162 Heartwarden and Jake’s new levels. He retrieves another Infused Golden Mushroom from the corpse, then activates the four wall platforms with regular Golden Mushrooms, dispelling the green seal on a grand gate. Inside, he touches a heart-like core—the Heart of the Undergrowth—and chooses to pursue what the Deepdwellers sought rather than end the dungeon now.
