38. Schemes Of An Old Man
Overview
Jake experiments with integrating arcane affinity and stamina, but shelves risky internal tests to focus on external applications while clearing deeper Deepdweller villages. He reaches class 126 and race 116, then discovers an immense ancient wall and a gate guarded by a powerful Heartwarden.
Cut to Earth: Miyamoto trains his prodigious great-granddaughter Reika and schemes to send her to Haven to learn from and challenge Jake, aiming for knowledge exchange, political ties, and potential alliance.
Summary
Jake reflects on his level 120 skill choices and the System’s nudge to apply arcane affinity beyond mana. He reviews prior stamina–mana blending in Splitting Arrow and considers Arcane Powershot’s internal stamina and external arcane mana, questioning whether arcane-infused stamina can be safely used inside his body.
Recognizing the dual nature of his arcane affinity—stability and destruction—Jake tests options but deems internal experimentation too risky for now. He shelves aura-like or inner-energy approaches and focuses on external applications, continuing to clear Deepdweller villages while gathering herbs and refining combat use of his skills.
Over more than two weeks, Jake advances through the Undergrowth, leveling to class 125 and 126 and race 116. The terrain narrows until a colossal, ancient, artificial wall blocks the path at around 1,200 kilometers. Using Sphere of Perception, he senses a vast vine network beyond and locates a single guarded opening.
At the gate, Jake Identifies a Deepdweller Heartwarden at level 162, the strongest foe yet, and anticipates a challenging battle that could break the dungeon’s monotony and lead toward the Heart of the Undergrowth.
Scene shifts to Earth: Miyamoto spars with his great-granddaughter Reika, a gifted swordsman and rapidly advancing alchemist. Despite her doubts about diplomacy, he plans to send her and a delegation to Haven after the Treasure Hunt to learn from and challenge Lord Thayne, confident Jake will accept a worthy rival. Miyamoto also harbors quiet hopes for deeper ties between families.
