59. Executive Decision

Miranda arrives to support Jake with Sultan’s visit, having researched the merchant’s reputation and the backgrounds of his four enslaved D-graders. She positions herself as Haven’s leader, immediately declares slavery illegal retroactively, and orders Neil and Silas to verify the captives’ histories while opening negotiations.

Sultan admits coming to Haven to base operations, access the Pylon and Store, gain backing for the Treasure Hunt, and trade. Miranda presses him on lawbreaking while Jake watches, prepared to act depending on the truth. During the tense exchange, Sultan offers a beast pellet after nearly calling Sylphie “it,” subtly currying favor.

Neil and Silas return shaken: two captives match prior reports (a poisoner and a Pathfinder stalker-murderer), while the other two are far worse—partners who tortured and killed hundreds, including children, through a prolonged curse-ritual. Sultan openly details their atrocities; Neil confirms their pride in the crimes, and Silas leaves in distress.

Recognizing the severity, Jake makes an immediate executive decision. He enters the cabin, violently ejects the two torturer-hexers, kills them swiftly outside, and returns within minutes. With the executions done, Jake signals the meeting to continue, leaving the remaining two captives for further judgment as negotiations with Sultan proceed.
