30. Golden Mushroom

The Deepdwellers’ suicide explosion floods the area with lethal life energy, overgrowing the terrain and animating it briefly. Jake endures by combining his arcane barrier, Scales of the Malefic Viper, arcane mana to shred invading energies, and the Scimitar of Cursed Hunger to siphon excess—despite stabbing himself to do it.

With the blast spent, Jake targets two surviving Fungalmancers hiding a hundred meters underground. He hovers within sphere range and jackhammers the reinforced earth with rapid arcane arrows. Forced to surface as their hiding duration ends and local terrain control is disrupted, both Fungalmancers are slain in swift ambushes.

Investigating the intact rubble dome, Jake finds a barriered, palm-sized golden mushroom. Identify reveals it as an Infused Golden Mushroom, a dungeon quest item needed to open the Heart of the Undergrowth and bound to the instance. He pockets it, inferring bonus objectives revolve around collecting limited mushrooms.

Continuing deeper in a zigzag search, Jake harvests and eats numerous local herbs to study the Undergrowth’s unique environment. The corridor widens slightly as he advances.

He then spots a standoff: a powerful Undergrowth Cave Troll guarding a cave versus a Deepdweller hunting party with two Fungalmancers. After a tense wait, a Deepdweller Warlord with five elite Warriors arrives to lead an assault. From stealth, Jake plans to intervene and disrupt both sides to claim whatever the troll protects—likely another Golden Mushroom.
