Intermission 8 - William (3/3)

Overview

William forces entry to a beleaguered camp, reunites Ms. Kim with her doctor friend Mary, and learns a pack of high-level feline monsters stalks the area. He hunts them down and returns with their heads, shocking the camp. Later, William clears a dangerous bubble and reluctantly kills a D-grade, leading to a Pylon claim that installs Milas as City Lord while naming William the owner. William refuses to attend the Congress, and Ms. Kim resolves to go herself, recognizing his unaddressed trauma tied to a yellow-eyed monster.

Summary

William defuses a standoff at a guarded camp by choking a taunting sentry with an unseen restraint, forcing entry for himself, Ms. Kim, and sleeping Seo. Inside, they find a dispirited settlement and a makeshift hospital where Mary, Kim’s doctor friend, is exhausting herself healing grievously wounded survivors of repeated ambushes by bipedal, cat-like monsters.

Mary explains the pack toys with teams and strikes mostly at night. Milas, a level 39 metal caster and Mary’s neighbor, confirms five attackers at unreadable levels. Eager for a challenge, William heads out alone toward their hunting grounds despite cautions, and soon returns uninjured with six severed feline heads—one from a level 77—drawing campwide shock and a scolding from Ms. Kim for the gore around children.

Time passes as the group travels together. They encounter a bubble sheltering many strong monsters and a D-grade. William kills all the lesser creatures and, despite clear anxiety, ultimately slays the D-grade only when forced, then claims the Pylon. The System designates Milas as City Lord and names William the owner.

When an opportunity to attend the Congress arises, William declines, calling it a waste of time. Ms. Kim reflects on his growth—fewer human kills and attempts at nonviolent resolutions—yet notes his persistent avoidance of discussing how his tutorial ended. Night terrors about a yellow-eyed monster, reactions to archers and dark mana, and discomfort around unreadable levels reveal lingering trauma. Concluding William will not face the Congress, Ms. Kim decides to go herself to learn what happened.
