47. Something Long Overdue
Overview
Jake finally focuses on long-neglected equipment, deciding to keep his soulbound necklace and beloved boots while planning upgrades to ring, chest, bracers, and gloves. He inspects Hank’s unexpectedly expansive underground complex beneath his lodge. Venturing into Haven incognito, he samples street food, tests payment systems, and learns where to find the builders.
Summary
Jake acknowledges he has neglected his gear and reviews each slot. He keeps the soulbound Prodigious Alchemist’s Necklace of Holding despite its low stats, unwilling to risk an upgrade without absolute trust. He also clings to his durable, comfortable Boots of the Wandering Alchemist, while resolving to improve his second ring, chestpiece, bracers, and gloves.
He reflects on equipment slot rules and options but avoids a full overhaul, reaffirming his preference for a mask. Remembering unfinished work beneath his lodge, Jake descends to a newly installed metal door and a reinforced shaft leading to a large, developing underground complex. Hank’s team has exceeded expectations, beginning an expansive bunker and a potential link to the dungeon cave.
Comforted by the subterranean space’s feel, Jake returns topside, deciding to consult Hank and pursue gear upgrades. He heads to Haven on foot, cloaked and stealthy, noting the city’s unusual lack of constant defenses and the deterrent presence of his allied birds. He muses on Miranda’s imminent D-grade and territorial claims stabilizing the Fort.
Approaching the city, Jake practices moderating his senses and joins a skewer stand line. He observes the cook’s skilled mana use, pays via will through a transaction plate that logs transfers, and draws curious looks. The food provides minor regenerative buffs. Jake asks for the builders’ leadership and is directed to either the guild or the Fort, with caravans running regularly.
Embarrassed for holding up the line, Jake moves on, still incognito, and sets off to find the guild, intent on coordinating construction and securing long-overdue gear upgrades.
