Chapter 12: Fighting to the Death, and Other Womanly Pursuits

Alexis flees through Rome with two winged Titans in pursuit, resisting the urge to teleport so she won’t validate Augustus’s doubts. Seeing elderly chess players nearby, she refuses Nyx’s plea to escape and interposes herself, firing to draw the Titans’ focus. Fluffy Jr. mauls one Titan’s throat while Alexis stabs the other, channeling her poisonous blood to collapse it—only to be raked down the back and nearly black out.

The first Titan reanimates and snatches Alexis into the sky. Crushed in its grip and fading, she risks a short-distance leap—“Domus”—crashing both of them onto a chess table. Amid smoke and ringing ears, she notices Lucia, an elderly woman slashed by debris, but the second Titan rises. Forcing herself away, Alexis arms up again as both Titans’ mangled bodies knit back together.

Alexis chains brief teleports to keep civilians safe, peppering the Titans’ wings to ground them. In agony and half-deaf, she embraces a last stand. Her protector bond surges; Fluffy Jr. enlarges mid-leap and hurls a Titan back. Alexis grapples the other, bleeding on it to poison it, killing it again—yet a flailing talon shears off her ear as it convulses.

As the Titan beneath her reanimates, Alexis collapses, accepting death while Nyx guards her. Augustus arrives ferociously, chaining a captured Titan, choking another, and finishing them with knives and gunfire. Kharon turns Alexis’s face, sees her ruined ear, and, without hesitation, cuts off his own ear and begins sewing it onto her, murmuring, “Per angusta ad augusta.”

Augustus retrieves Hercules tags from Alexis and kisses her forehead as rain pours. Poco perches on his shoulder, and Kharon continues stitching. The Titans are down, the civilians live, and Alexis survives by razor-thin margins—bloodied, bonded, and marked by the brutal new order.
