Chapter 37: Demons in the Flesh of Men

On SGC Day 9, storm clouds and tension mirror Alexis’s unease and the volatile chemistry growing between her, Kharon, and Augustus. Zeus arrives with his scepter, declares Achilles’s labors, and orders arena cameras cut. Achilles enters with Nero—and shockingly, Patro joins him, limping with a freshly severed Achilles tendon, a public humiliation meant as Olympian dominance.

Given permission, Patro moves to unmask Achilles, but Achilles halts him and sends him away. Rain sheets down as four Nemean wolves charge. Achilles and Nero coordinate with ruthless speed: Achilles knifes and breaks necks while Nero tears out a throat, ending the first round within minutes. The crowd chants for the unmuzzling.

Four pale men enter for round two, then transform into towering Minotaurs. Chthonic leaders rise; Persephone looks back at Alexis with pity. Achilles finally removes the muzzle, revealing an X of heavy scars across his lips—evidence someone once tried to sew his mouth shut. He then slashes his own heel and points the bloody knife at Zeus, signaling this fight is for Patro.

As the Minotaurs charge, Achilles opens his mouth and unleashes Greek fire. The inferno melts the Minotaurs to steaming sludge; rain, sand, and even the arena’s electrified dome catch fire. Zeus, recognizing Achilles has technically obeyed orders, withdraws as Olympians and creatures flee. Achilles’s steps glass the sand as Ares and the Chthonics cheer the devastation.

Amid the fiery deluge, Achilles retrieves his fireproof mask. In the stands, Alexis connects past hints to Achilles’s true nature. Kharon grips her neck and murmurs, “Don’t be afraid,” a chillingly intimate warning as Alexis fully grasps the godlike magnitude of Chthonic power and the new stakes reshaping every alliance.
