On a quiet, storm-emptied night before the initiation massacre, Kharon endures a splitting headache linked to Augustus while he stands watch over a sleeping Alexis. He reflects that their marriage bond is amplifying his Chthonic power and healing, yet it has also damaged Alexis’s trust in him.

Kharon admits he nearly begged for death earlier, only for Alexis to spare him and touch him with a radiant, sunlike healing light—proof of a power he both reveres and fears. Gripped by obsessive protectiveness, he rationalizes his nightly prowls and the roses he leaves, convincing himself her small acknowledgments mean hope.

He steps from the shadows and drapes a strand of rare blue diamonds—the House of Artemis’s stone—around Alexis’s neck, savoring the possessive symbolism. As Alexis whimpers through a nightmare, Kharon’s resolve hardens: he will be her unseen guardian, the monster behind her, valuing diamonds, roses, weapons, and blood as his language of love.
