Chapter 41: The Eldest Heir
Overview
On Day 10, Drex becomes the first Olympian to compete, flees two Chimeras, and is publicly branded by Zeus, nudging him toward Chthonic sympathy. On Day 11, Zeus escalates by unleashing three Typhons. Kharon slays them but is burned by acid, triggering shared bond-pain in Alexis and Augustus and forcing Hades to intervene.
Summary
Day 10 opens with Augustus noting Zeus’s smugness as Drex enters the arena as the first Olympian participant. Two Chimeras are released; Drex panics, runs for thirty minutes, then escapes the gate and loses both labors. Guards execute the beasts. Zeus personally brands Drex twice despite crowd sympathy; Drex sneers back, hinting a shift toward Chthonic allegiance.
At the symposium, Drex appears bandaged and gravitates to Alexis, aggravating Kharon’s and Augustus’s jealousy. That night, Kharon, Augustus, and Alexis hold each other in silence, aware Kharon fights tomorrow.
Day 11, the crowd chants for Kharon as he enters with his hellhounds and Artemis’s bow, openly mocking Artemis. Zeus unleashes three Typhons, a lethal escalation. Kharon methodically kills all three—arrows down two through their beaks as the hounds maul, then a final skull-piercing strike on the last—but caustic spit burns through his chest.
Kharon bows to Artemis and exits, acting unbothered while his skin boils. In the stands, Augustus is wracked with chest agony, then sees Alexis collapse with the same pain. Realizing the triad bond is transmitting Kharon’s injuries, Augustus shouts for help. Hades demands answers; Augustus explains the bond-pain link. Hades teleports away to aid Kharon as Augustus and Alexis cling to consciousness, exchanging declarations of love amid shared torment.
