Chapter 22: Enemies Who Crawl for You

Alexis unveils Nyx, her echidna, provoking Kharon’s outrage over harboring a class-seven kill-on-sight beast. Augustus agrees to pretend they saw nothing, honoring Alexis’s demand. He then produces a vial of Alexis’s blood, revealing that Patro and Achilles pushed a plan for her to use it to free herself from the marriage.

Kharon demonstrates his link with his hellhounds and admits he witnessed Alexis’s conversation with Patro. Augustus and Kharon cut themselves, pour and drink Alexis’s blood, and dare her to sever their bond. As Alexis’s pain-power erupts, they collapse, apologizing and urging her to take revenge even as the bond starts breaking and shared agony intensifies.

Guided by Nyx to control her breathing, Alexis halts the poisoning. A bright white light flares from her hands when she touches Kharon; the pain ebbs and Kharon’s wounds smooth, hinting at a healing effect. The bond holds. Exhausted, Alexis decides not to kill them and admits she wants to give them a chance beyond the merely physical.

Kharon delivers a raw, erotic-tinged apology, then pulls back, framing it as contrition. Augustus offers a gentle, reverent kiss. Across the table, a gagged Patro thrashes in distress while Achilles watches silently. Kharon and Augustus pledge absolute devotion to Alexis, sealing a volatile but surviving union.
