Chapter 21: Omens and Warnings
Overview
On the stormy day before the initiation massacre, Ceres uncovers predestination clues in a House of Zeus text and hints they matter tonight, unsettling Alexis. Later, Kharon and Augustus ambush Alexis with Patro and Achilles bound, coercing her to comply. Alexis refuses submission and reveals Nyx as a lethal deterrent.
Summary
Alexis wakes to a raging storm and finds Ceres surrounded by ancient tomes. Ceres excitedly identifies a rare umlaut in a predestination language within a House of Zeus text, claiming it connects to Alexis’s disappearance and Ceres’s memory loss. She shows Alexis a crude symbol—line, circled top, squiggle, and two cloud-like shapes—insisting it matters tonight, then abruptly discards it. When Alexis retrieves the page, it is inexplicably blank. Ceres urges Alexis to trust her perceptions and abilities.
Shaken, Alexis retreats to rest, confiding into her calculator about seeing symbols and the grim reaper, and feeling like she is dying when she thinks of her husbands. A summons calls her to the darkened dining room, where storm winds and firelight set an ominous tone.
Kharon and Augustus reveal Patro gagged and Achilles chained with Titan-grade restraints. Kharon demands Alexis sit, threatening to cut Achilles’s ear if she refuses. Alexis stays standing, weighing the coercion against her safety and control.
Refusing to yield, Alexis raises her arm as Nyx manifests—an echidna with vivid purple eyes coiled to strike—turning her hand into a living weapon. The room freezes as Augustus recognizes the venomous threat, and the confrontation hangs in a charged stalemate.
