Chapter 43: The 12 Labors of Hercules
Overview
On Day 13, Alexis is forced into the Twelve Labors and faces eight Nemean lions instead of four. Near death, she discovers her blood can harden into a poisonous rod, enabling her to survive. She publicly defies Zeus; Hades’s fog averts war. Zeus, undeterred, orders a controversial second round.
Summary
Alexis wakes on SGC Day 13 to pounding on her door, finding Augustus, Kharon, and most beasts absent. Guards hustle her through the labyrinth; Fluffy Jr. has grown alarmingly and is injured. In a silver-walled armory she hastily selects a spear on Nyx’s advice, then is thrust into a storm-dark arena as Zeus declares her Twelve Labors.
The first gate lifts and, instead of four, eight Nemean lions surround her. With Nyx and Fluffy Jr., Alexis kills two quickly, but a mauling leaves her crushed and half-blinded. As more lions close in, she throws her spear to drop one and is struck by another—only to discover the attacker dead beside her.
Realizing no savior intervened, Alexis sees a solid crimson rod in her own hand: her blood has hardened into a poisonous staff that can be reshaped at will. She uses it to finish the pride. The crowd erupts, chanting “Hercules,” while Fluffy Jr. collapses and Nyx, badly wounded, clings to Alexis’s leg, bleeding.
Fury focuses Alexis on Zeus; she points her blood-rod at him as Hades’s fog swells and Persephone screams, narrowly averting open war. Alexis shouts that she knows what Zeus did. When order barely restores, Zeus announces a second round, prompting Ares’s outrage and Hades’s objection that the next foes are under investigation.
Despite protests, Zeus insists the federation has approved the test and frames it as Alexis proving her honor. Alexis signals Hades to stand down, accepting the challenge as personal vengeance. The gate rises again amid a screech, ending the chapter on the brink of the next trial.
