Overview
In a flashback, Stuart follows Jessamine from her child’s school and engineers a meeting at a pub. He observes Jessamine’s alcoholism, returns her mittens, and wins her confidence. Jessamine reveals an affair with a married man while Stuart positions himself as a helper, offering to walk her dog.
The chapter establishes Stuart’s predatory interest and Jessamine’s vulnerability, linking them to Hampstead and the Westie that recurs in the present-day plot.
Summary
Ten years earlier, Stuart follows a woman from a Hampstead school after watching her collect her daughter. He notes the daughter, Daisy, has a sprained wrist and wants hospital care, but Jessamine refuses because she has the dog with her, promising painkillers and a later taxi. Stuart holds back as they head into the Vale of Health.
The next day, Stuart observes Jessamine arriving at the pub before noon and reflects on his own history with addiction and his current controlled drinking. After her second drink, he approaches, returning mittens she left the previous day and using the gesture to open conversation.
As they talk, Jessamine downplays Daisy’s injury and, prompted by Stuart, reveals her complicated situation: Daisy’s father is married, has nearly grown children, and despite promises to leave, seems closer than ever to his wife. Jessamine feels discarded and on the brink; Stuart pointedly tells her he “sees” her and offers help, including walking her Westie, which she defensively declines.
Stuart shares curated details about his own life—two children he barely knows, a solitary routine, no drugs, and stability—to appear trustworthy. They drink until Jessamine’s alarm reminds her to collect Daisy. As she leaves, she finally gives her name, Jessamine; Stuart gives his. She departs unsteady into the winter afternoon.
