Chapter Fifty-Two

Jane plans a careful, nonthreatening visit to Dresden Close. She brings evidence: Daisy’s photo, a torn letterhead from Jasper’s trailer, Patch the Clown’s headshot, and circus poster photos. On arrival, the fan palm and red car confirm the address. Stella Madden answers, recognizes Jasper Black from the name on the torn letter, and invites Jane in.

Stella recounts how Jasper became their lodger after leaving home to attend clowning school in Winchester. Initially polite and neat, he grew withdrawn and brooding when his classes ended and work was scarce. He started going out late at night, and Stella felt an ominous, unsafe “aura,” as if Jasper resented her.

Stella recalls a local news story on 10 June 2008: a woman followed and terrorized in a nearby park by a man in a clown mask who also exposed himself. The incident’s proximity and timing made Stella and her husband suspect Jasper. Unwilling to keep him in their home, they fabricated a reason to end the lodging. Jasper accepted, soon found work with Martello’s, and left.

When Jane shows the torn letterhead, Stella remembers forwarding Jasper a single item of post about a year earlier—the first in years. Noting the “Dr.” on the fragment, Stella mentions Jasper once said he was seeing a therapist, which Jane realizes may connect the letter to a clinic and provide insight into Jasper’s state of mind.

Jane leaves with two key leads: the probable 2008 harassment near Cherry Wood Primary tying into Jasper’s clown persona, and the recent letter from a doctor that could identify Jasper’s therapist and reveal his inner motivations.
