Summary
Stuart hurries from the pub with Hugo, trembling at the prospect of Jane taking her findings to the police. Feeling cornered in the house with “strange women,” he fights the urge to drink, then secretly spikes a teacup with Jessamine’s rum to steady his nerves.
He checks on Jessamine, noting how aged and inert she seems, then wakes her. Stuart explains that Jane, the woman who returned Hugo, has been questioning people and now knows about Claire Connolly, Jessamine, and Jasper. He urges Jessamine to advise him as he fears Jane will go to the police imminently.
As Stuart pleads for a plan, the bedroom door creaks. A pale face and fingers appear in the gap. After confirming with a nod, the unidentified person is invited in, leaving the confrontation poised on a knife-edge.
