Overview

Summary
Seven years earlier, Stuart wakes after thirty-six hours to find his ear partially severed, bandaged, and himself in a blocked-off former au pair bedroom. Jessamine claims the injury was accidental, says her mother stitched him to avoid hospital “questions,” and insists he stay put.
When Stuart protests about pain and asks for hospital care, Jessamine denies the need and slaps his hand away from the bandages, reinforcing her control. She reveals the room was sealed after the last au pair left and has been repurposed as “Stuart’s bedroom,” while locking the door behind her despite denying it.
Stuart recalls Jessamine threatening to cut off his other ear with a knife. Jessamine minimizes this as a joke with a butter knife, and pivots to tenderness. She bathes him, controls his movements, and provides caretaking that blurs apology and domination.
Exhausted and hurt, Stuart accepts her ministrations, noting her sobriety and apparent efforts with Daisy as signs of possible change.
