Epilogue

Overview

In an epilogue set eighteen years earlier, Jasper begins EMDR therapy and revisits the night of the basement murders. He remembers finding Allen dead, Jessamine holding the baby and the knife, and Claire slain, while Jessamine falsely blames Claire.

The session crystallizes Jasper’s awareness of his family’s evil and his own escalating predation, motivating his attempt to purge it.

Summary

Jasper Black arrives for an appointment with EMDR therapist Dr. Twist, anxious and hungry, seeking treatment for nightmares and compulsions that have made him frightening toward women. He hopes silent therapy can reach what he cannot speak.

At Dr. Twist’s direction, Jasper returns in his mind to the hidden basement beneath his father Allen’s study. He recalls the secret imprisonment of “au pair girls,” focusing on Claire, whom Jasper liked and protected, and who once played guitar for him.

In the memory, Jasper sees Allen dead from a throat wound, Jessamine cradling the baby and holding the small knife Jasper had smuggled to Claire, and Claire murdered against a blood-smeared wall. Jessamine claims Claire killed Allen and was about to escape with the baby.

Jasper challenges Jessamine, insisting she could have let Claire go and called the police. Confronted with Jessamine’s cold justification, he realizes his sister’s malice mirrors their father’s depravity, abetted by their mother’s denial.

The baby’s crying and the scene’s horror cement Jasper’s belief that their family is poisoned by evil—including himself. He apologizes to Claire in his mind and confirms to Dr. Twist that he has “found the place,” resolving to pursue treatment to purge the predatory persona overtaking him.
