Summary
Evening falls in Covent Garden as Dexter pours wine for Jane. Jane braces for her planned police visit in the morning, trying to numb the vivid image of the masked clown’s obscene trick. She thanks Dexter for support and declares love, then unexpectedly tears up, overwhelmed by the case.
Jane recognizes her reaction stems from how the Blacks’ chaos echoes her own childhood: parental neglect, addiction, blurred boundaries, fear, and helplessness. She contrasts her bright public persona with Jasper’s clown mask, seeing her own identity as a protective performance.
