Overview
Jasper narrates how Claire is initially treated like family, masking the terror of life under their father. When Claire is taken to the study and effectively disappears, Jasper hears disturbing sounds that escalate his fear. Realizing the danger has intensified, he resolves to smuggle Claire a small knife to help her escape.
Summary
Jasper describes Claire’s early days in the house, where she keeps her name and outward freedoms. She eats, watches TV, plays guitar with Jessamine, and practices clowning with Jasper, but remains visibly terrified of Daddy. Jasper senses Claire’s constant search for escape and quietly encourages it, leaving doors unlocked and hinting he would help.
He contrasts the household’s calm surface with the reality of a dangerous man who performs affection and domesticity while holding lethal power over everyone. Despite the laughter and routines, Jasper and the others live in fear, knowing Daddy could kill them at any moment.
Eventually, circumstances change: Claire is taken downstairs to Daddy’s study and is no longer seen. For nearly a year Jasper only hears her, as with the other girls. One day he hears a new, alarming noise that convinces him the situation has escalated beyond what he can bear.
With Daddy at work and Mummy out shopping, Jasper steals a small knife from the back of a kitchen drawer and hides it up his sleeve. He commits to finding a way to get the knife to Claire, hoping it will help her escape.
